The Google Earth™ Extension for the AutoCAD® 2007, Autodesk® Architectural Desktop 2007, Autodesk® Civil 3D®, and Autodesk Map® 3D 2007 software products is now available for Beta testing on the Autodesk Labs website. This is a public Beta (no non-disclosure agreement is required) and we would appreciate your customers’ valuable feedback while they explore this new application.

This publishing tool is designed specifically to meet the needs of architects, designers, and engineers who use Autodesk products. With the easy-to-use, wizard-driven interface, users can publish 3D models directly from AutoCAD into Google Earth.

From the planning process all the way through to public approval, everyone involved can now view and navigate the project in the context of the rich, interactive Google Earth environment. Users can:

deliver high-impact presentations at planning board meetings or public hearings,
streamline the preliminary project planning process,
share conceptual plans with your clients as they develop,

E frontier, developers of Poser, Shade, Manga Studio and other applications, have announced the acquisition of Amapi, a 3D modeling software application, from Eovia Europe. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Amapi is a Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS)-based 3D modeling application that supports IGES, SAT and DWG formats. Amapi is designed to appeal to 3D designers, CAD engineers and others who need to create 3D models. It runs on Mac OS X and Windows.

Bionatics, developer of 3D plant modeling and simulation tools for the CG industry, launched version 4 of its 3D plant modeler natFX for 3ds max.
 
 natFX's version 4 offers new features including the addition of a new modeling function for real-time called "Volumetric Mode", as well as "Sculpt Trunk", which is used to sculpt and deform trunks to give trees a more realistic form.
 
 The "Volumetric Mode" combines a full 3D modeling for trunk and main branches with impostors facing the camera for the foliage. This technique associates realism of the tree with medium polygon count and low texture count. It also privileges the density of the foliage while respecting the architecture of the branches. SAN RAFAEL, Calif., June 29, 2006—Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) today announced the first purchase in Asia Pacific of its flagship Discreet Flame visual effects system running on the Linux operating system. The purchase was made by Frame, Set & Match (FSM), a Sydney-based, independent post-production facility with more than 20 years of experience in television commercials, feature films, television series and television documentaries.

FSM’s post-production workflow now includes two of Autodesk’s Discreet Flame systems on Linux, a customized Discreet Flame system on IRIX, and Autodesk’s Discreet Fire nonlinear editing/finishing system. These Autodesk systems form the backbone of FSM’s visual effects, compositing and long-form editing services.
