Car manufacturers are using CGI to replace traditional photography PDF Print E-mail
Written by Georg Gules

DCCCafe writes:

For marketing departments of automobile manufacturers, car photography is plain expensive. First they have to create a prototype, a process that usually costs around ten times more than producing a vehicle already in production. Then the car has to be shipped out to an exotic location for photography. If you want your car to be in the snow, and it happens to be summer in Northern America, then the car, along with a team of photographers are transported far below the equator. After all this, you often still have to pay licensing fees every time you use the photographs.

Luckily, there is another way: using advanced CGI. Engineers at car manufacturers employ Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools to create advanced 3D models of automobiles during the design process. These are already highly detailed and exactly to scale. After being changed into formats usable by digital content creators, these CAD models can be made into very powerful – and cheap – marketing images. At the forefront of supplanting photography with DCC is Right Hemisphere, a leading producer of Product Graphics Management (PGM) software.
